“Territórios em Mudança” – The Case of Portimão 1947–2047
The booklet “Territórios em Mudança: O caso de Portimão 1947–2047” (Changing Territories: The Case of Portimão 1947–2047) originates from the exhibition held at the Atrium of Building C, NOVA FCSH (26 May to 6 June 2025), organized by CICS.NOVA, Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences, within the scope of the MOPLAND project and with institutional support
It brings together the analysis of one hundred years of land use transformations in Portimão, based on multi-temporal geographic data, including aerial photographs and orthophotomaps. The materials illustrate how the municipality evolved from a predominantly rural landscape into a city shaped by tourism, urban expansion and sustainability challenges.
The booklet documents the tensions among the agents that shaped the territory and the consequences for local communities, while also anticipating possible futures through simulation models up to 2047.
Scientific curatorship was provided by Raquel Faria de Deus and José António Tenedório, with collaboration from MOPLAND research fellows Ricardo Teixeira and Carolina Coelho.
The underlying research was awarded the Orlando Ribeiro National Geography Prize 2015–2016 by the Portuguese Association of Geographers.
