Open Class with Colégio Académico at NOVA FCSH
The Major Land Use Transformations in the Municipality of Lisbon 1995–2018
Following the research activities of the MOPLAND project, NOVA FCSH, the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), and the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at NOVA FCSH enthusiastically hosted, during the month of June, around 70 students from the 3rd cycle of Basic Education of Colégio Académico de Lisboa for an educational visit, which included an Open Class and an immersive experience of contact with scientific research in a university setting.
Under the theme “The Major Land Use Transformations in the Municipality of Lisbon 1995–2018”, this initiative had as its main objective to promote public knowledge about research on land use and occupation transformations, as well as to raise awareness among children and young people of the importance of land use planning decisions for territorial sustainability.
The initiative included two main moments: a guided visit led by the scientific curator Raquel Faria de Deus to the exhibition “Territórios em Mudança” (“Territories in Transition”), followed by an Open Class based on the flipped classroom model, where students, using real geographic data on land use, proposed an interdisciplinary reflection on the spatial and temporal dynamics of Lisbon’s land use.
This was an initiative of CICS.NOVA in partnership with the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at NOVA FCSH and Colégio Académico de Lisboa, which fostered exchange with other educational institutions, valued the presence of the school community at NOVA FCSH, and stimulated the critical and informed participation of children and young people in discussions about Territory.
The initiative clearly expressed MOPLAND’s commitment to open science and civic involvement through geographic knowledge, strengthening the connection between academic research and society..
